Overview

The Royal George brings together the character of a historic Welsh inn and the comforts of a contemporary country hotel. Set in Tintern, Monmouthshire, beneath the wooded hills of the Wye Valley, it makes an inviting base for woodland walks, visits to Tintern Abbey and unhurried meals close to your room.

Accommodation spans Welsh Heritage Rooms and Garden Rooms, offering a choice of historic character or an outlook over the grounds. One-bedroom options sleep two, while a two-bedroom suite option sleeps four. Cats are welcome, making this a countryside break you can share with your feline companion.

The Property

The Heritage Rooms occupy the original building and celebrate notable Welsh figures through individual names and distinctive interiors. Preserved features include exposed beams and original floorboards, while the Garden Rooms offer a more contemporary setting overlooking the landscaped grounds. Some Garden Room categories have a private patio or balcony, and selected suites include a sitting area.

Bed arrangements vary by category, with double, king and twin options available. Rooms have private bathrooms, and rainfall showers, botanical toiletries and hairdryers add comfort to your stay. Other amenities include Wi-Fi, Smart TVs, Nespresso machines, kettles with a tea selection, mini-fridges and in-room safes. Ironing facilities are available on request.

Food is a highlight here. The Lower Deck Pub serves familiar favourites, while the Upper Deck Restaurant offers a more refined dining experience built around seasonal ingredients. The café provides another place to pause over coffee, and the Garden offers outdoor dining and wood-fired pizza. Opening days and menus vary between venues. Breakfast is available, with inclusion depending on your booked rate.

The shared garden includes outdoor seating and a firepit, with a fireplace in the reception area for a cosy indoor welcome. Free on-site self-parking is available, although spaces are limited.

Location

Tintern sits on the Welsh side of the River Wye, surrounded by wooded slopes and the landscapes of the Wye Valley. Tintern Abbey is within walking distance, offering an easy starting point for exploring the village and its historic surroundings.

For a longer outing, the five-mile circular Angidy Trail explores the valley and its industrial heritage. The Wye Valley Greenway provides a five-mile shared walking and cycling route between Tintern and Chepstow, largely following the former railway. Walkers looking for a climb can head through woodland towards Devil’s Pulpit, a viewpoint overlooking Tintern Abbey and the Wales–England border.

The Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke Path offer further options for exploring the area, giving you plenty of choice between a gentle local wander and a more substantial day outdoors.
